Just because motor oil will work in the transmission, doesn't mean that you should do that. It's a manual transmission, get a fluid thats made for the job. Redline Shock proof Heavy.
Can you use it? Yes. Would you want to use motor oil in your trans? No. Use Synthetic GEAR OIL designed to hold up in gearboxes. Mobile one 75w90 is right up the street at the local auto store. Usually it's one quart capacity (consult owners manual).
See guys, thats how it's done. Simple and to the point.
You will soon find that simply using the word AMSOIL here is like cussing someones mama. With that simple fact stated, like Syn3, AMSOIL MCV 20W50 is disigned for all three holes. It even meets API standards for gear oil GL-1 which is appropriete for the spur type gears in our transmissions. However, I still feel more comfortable with AMSOIL Severe Gear SAE 75W90 in my transmission. I've used it for years and many miles. It is a superior product, I like it.

Need to know if Amsoil 20W50 is ok to use in the trany.
If it is, how much do you put in?
No KB I haven't tried it. What would the advantages be? Is that what you're using?

Steve: you ever try the severe gear 85-140? My dealer stocks the Bel-Ray 85-140 gear saver and they like it.
I'm using Redline Shockproof Heavy and like it. But somebody was complaining Redline SH didn't quiet their trans and I was wondering if the 85-140 would be an alternative? I just don't know of anybody who has used it.

I hadn't seen that complaint, but one reason I personally don't subscribe to the EP type lube in my transmission is that the EP additives are only activated if put under extreme pressure. The spur and helical gears in our transmissions do not create the type pressures that activate the EP additives. Therefore, I can't see the benefit of having these solids (EP additives) in the trans to begin with. Regarding the 85W140, I'll look into that to see if there might be any advantages to it. My guess at this point is that the higher viscocity would not be advantagous due to the transmission having to "work harder" to move the fluid. This would effect the efficiency of the trans. The trans was designed to "work" most efficiently with 75W90. But hey, I could be wrong. I'll look into it and get back.

I just started using Amsoil products in all three holes after years of using Red-Line. To be honest, I really can't tell any difference. Is that good, yes, cause Red-Line is just to damn hard to find around here. Ya gotta go to three different parts stores just to find the Shock-proof heavy. I'm using the Amsoil 75-90 Gear Oil and the tranny shifts great and it's as quiet as when I used RL.
