Default Primary oil question

Whats going on here? When I changed the oil in my primary, my owners manual said to use 26 0z. of oil. It also said to fill to the bottom of the derby cover opening. There's no way 26oz. will fill it that high. When I filled it to the bottom of the clutch opening it took almost 2 qts. My clymer manual said to use 1.75 qts. That's a little closer to what it really took. So who do I beleive the clymer manual or the service manual. Why would H.D. say to fill to the clutch opening with only 26oz. when it won't fill it that far? Will only 26oz. of oil be enough to properly lube the chain and clutch assembly? Thanks for any info on this. crzrlou

Makes ya wonder, huh? I just filled my primary last night. Clymer said one amount, HD manual said another. I decided to do it (key Frank Sinatra singing "My Way") another way. Leave bike on kick stand, fill to near bottom of derby opening, stand bike upright and make sure primary chain is in oil. That'll keep the chain well-lubed, and that's what counts, no matter what the amount is.

If it's a twin cam motor, then this is what the HD manual says:

"Pour 26 oz (768.9 ml) of primary chaincase lubricant in through the clutch inspection cover opening. See figure 1-26. The primary chaincase lubricant level is acceptable when lubricant is visible in the bottom of the chaincase with the motorcycle standing upright (not resting on jiffy stand)"

In other words, to the bottom of the diaphragm spring, not up the bottom of the inspection hole. The clutch will drag if you put too much oil in. It's quite hard to see down to the bottom of the chaincase as the gap is much smaller than it looks in the diagram in the book.

Hope this helps.

When's the last time you checked the primary chain tension?

Hi,

If you put to much oil in the primary it can cause your trans to have problems finding neutral. My cause other problems with the clutch. It should be filled so the chain at the bottom is just covered when the bike is straight up. That should be around 26oz of fluid.

My 5 cents.....
