Does anyone know why everyone seems to think its ok to use GL5 rated oil in the transmission of a twin cam 88 motor. The only info I can find in the owners manual is the part number for the oil that should be used, 99891-84 or 99892-84 and both of these only tell you if it is semi syn (syn 3) or mineral oil (HD 360) ?? So where does the info about GL ratings and viscosities for H.D. Motorcycles come from??

I use various good quality gear oils in the 75-90 wt range (depending on price at the time) for my Evo trannys in which HD says Syn 3 is fine as well as for twin cams.
Valvoline makes a semi syn brand called DuraGear which is well priced here in Australia and works fine for me. Any good quality shear stable gear oil will do the job nicely.
I wouldn't use pricey Syn 3, when with a bit of research you will find as good or better for less $$$.
Just my thoughts--

Hd doesn't put API specs in their publications because they want you to buy only their products when their products are very expensive and only average in quality. HD Formula+ is a 50w oil with a weak additive package. You can buy Mobil1 Synthetic 75w90 GL5 gear oil for about the same price. You can get dino GL5 gear lube at any auto parts store for about $5/qt which will out perform Formula+
[quote=1peter; Mobil 1 75-90 would be my choice but in Australia you can only buy it in 20 litre drums.[end quote]
Hi Peter, I used to run this in my '96 Special-- really nice lube but pricey. I adopted the policy a while back of "change motor oil; change primary fluid" and as I change fluids at 3000ks (approx 2000 miles) I went back to dino fluids W/ exception of the tranny where I run semi-syn valvoline 75-90 and change at 6000ks.
Cheers,
V2
