Default Oil Temp

I've done the SE air cleaner and added Vance N Hines pipes, got a Digital fuel optimizer and had the dealer tune it for me on their dyno.

After the dealer tuned the dfo for me the oil temp is hotter than it was the way I had it tuned. According to my dipstick temp guage it's at about 220 on a 70 degree day with easy riding. I haven't been caught in traffic yet.

I run the SE synthetic.

Is this temp normal? Should I install an oil cooler?

I can't answer that question, but I would like to add to this question. I was going to go and get one of those oil temp things for my Sporty but was told I really didn't need it since it ran really hot anyways and it wouldn't be of any use to have this information since it was suppose to run hot.

Hi, I have a 2004 Fatboy and under the same conditions you discribed I run about 220 also. But I am using regular HD oil. I will be swapping it out for sync-oil next change.

My 5 cents.

The oil temp gauges will drive you crazy watching them all the time. They also don't seem to last very long considering the cost. I would rather use an oil temp gauged mounted on fairing or handlebar. Harleys do run hot. Check with a dealer to see what normal temp should be before you install an oil cooler. The only twin cam with a factory oil cooler are the 103 cu in. You should not need one.

Wow I usually run around 150-180 degrees. I use 60 weight Revtech oil for HD and use an oil cooler.

220 degrees is nothing to be concerned about. The TC can run between 200 to 250 without problems. I would suggest that you try Mobil 1 V Twin instead of the SE oil. The mobil 1 is a full synthetic and will usually drop the temps a bit. I notices a difference when going from Syn3 to Mobil 1 V Twin

The TC also has a system to protect against overheating that works like this, these are engine temps, not oil temps

Injected Twin Cam High Temperature Idle
The 2002 and later fuel injected Twin Cam engines use a three phase heat
management system to reduce engine temperature under extreme conditions. Be
aware that a rider with a very hot engine may notice the affects of this three phase
heat management system and incorrectly assume an idle problem exists.
Phase 1 - At approximately 320˚ F the ECM will gradually reduce engine idle
speed until the engine temperature drops or the engine reaches 800 rpm.
Phase 2 - If engine temperature reaches 338˚ F the ECM richens the air/fuel
ratio to provide additional cooling.
Phase 3 - If the engine temperature reaches 356˚ F fuel injector pulses are
interrupted. The air drawn in and expelled helps cool the engine further.
Since there is no combustion it would be perceived as a misfire. This third
stage will only happen when the motorcycle is stationary.

I did the 95" kit on my 2004 RKC and installed an oil cooler. My oil temp runs at 220 on a 70 degree day using 20-50 HD regular motor oil. Next change I'm switching to synthetic oil and I am anxious to see if the oil temp drops. Has anyone else checked out the operating temp differences between regular and synthetic oils? By the way, before I did the 95" kit my oil temp was running at 220 without the oil cooler. According to my HD dealer the 95" runs hotter than the 88".

I switched from syn 3 to mobil 1 V twin and dropped about 10 degreese but the motor sounds much better and seems to be "happy" now. Will not go back to the syn 3 even if the M1 was twice the price.
Syn3 is not a full synthetic, it starts off with a different base stock, whereas M1 is a full synthetic.
