Oil Filter and Oil Change Question
Keep the level just below the filler neck in the tank with the bike up straight.
51348 Wix is a good choice.
Thanks for all your help so far. Indeed, the adaptor came out with the filter. I bought a 7/8" socket and was able with a LOT of force to remove the adaptor from the filter. I screwed the adaptor into the bike and it seated in an unusual manner. It screwed in easily by hand until the theads were virtually all the way into the hole in the bike. Then it took only about 1/8 of a turn on the socket to seat it very firmly. The reason I find this unusual is that I would think that a fitting like that which must hold back a hot fluid under pressure would either:
1) Have a tapered thread like a pipe thread so that the male portion steadily gets larger as it is screwed in thus sealing the threads or
2) Have some sort of O-ring to seal against leaks.
The adaptor had neither. It was like putting a nut on a bolt and turning the nut until it hits the head of the bolt. You can turn it all the way with fingers and then the wrench barely has to turn it at all to tighten it up. Did I do anything wrong in attaching this adaptor?
On a second question, while looking for the transmission drain plug (they sure hid that one between the shocks) I saw under the front right of the engine what looks like a second drain plug for the oil. This is an allen-headed bolt that looks like it is sticking out of the sump directly beneath the engine. More specifically, directly beneath the right side hydraulic push rod chrome cylinders. So far, I have drained the oil only from the place indicated in the owner's manual, a bolt built into the frame which is then attached to a tube flowing from the oil bag. Should I also drain the engine oil from this second location - the one under the front right of the engine? Thanks again for all your great help.
G'day,
Vinish
