Default When to change oil

Just purchased a 2010 Fatboy Lo.
Purchased by 1st owner Aug 2010.
He did the 1st service at 600 mi at which time he put V&H pipes and had it on the dyno for tuning done on 9/23/2010
It now has 1300 mi so that service was done alittle over a year ago.
I want to make sure I'm good warrenty wise and properly maintaning the bike.He used SYN oil should I change it prior to winter storage?Or just let it go for 5000 and service it then? Thanks for any help! Mark

I think you mean 2009 on the dyno not 10 days from now?

Yes, change the oil before layup. You should never let oil sit in an engine more than 1 year because it loses it's anti-corrosion ability (TBN) due to the acid build up of corrosion by products. Especially with a low mileage bike. I would change all 3 holes. If you refill the trans with Synthetic 75w90 gear oil like Mobil1 you can go a few years or 20,000 miles just checking it every month for any water intrusion from washing/rain etc. But the engine is 1 year or 5000 miles.

If you do your own service, get a cheap notebook and make a log of date/mileage/service and keep all the receipts for oil and filters etc. Best to use a HD filter and a Motorcycle rated oil. If you have a dealer do it then you are covered but keep your receipts.

Yep, ride away until you reach 5K miles, or winter storage (whichever comes 1st). Never want to hibernate on old oil & make sure you get a bettery tender to keep it topped off during storage: http://batterytender.com/

Shop around on the the internet b/c these can go as cheap as under $20...

Best advise is a little maintenance will help go a long long way.

I personally would change the oil before layup for winter sleep.

I just picked up my 2010, just broke 365 miles..... I figure by the time I put to sleep for winter I will have about 700 miles on her - she will be dealer maintained.

Keep all documents, a well documented serviced bike is worth more on resale than one which is not.
