Finally tried the M1 4t 10-40 that a few have bragged about. I'm happy with it shifts as good as ATF mix of amsoil primary. It's cheaper at Walmart and I don't have to mix. Will still run the mix at end of year for winter and to clean. After 45,000 miles of owning this bike my clutch needed it's first ajustment of less than a 1/8 turn.
Lubed my clutch cable today with red line shock proof. The difference in pull is far less. Most the drag is at the start of cable housing.
it's a ''batth'' type of set up with no oil pump or pressure for that matter, most oils fare well in the primary case. I went full synthetic....I'm a lazy head case when I wanna be.
My logic is / has been as follows:
the CLUTCH Plates in my EVO Era Harley-Davidson motorcycles
most resemble the STEEL & FRICTION Plates in the automatic transmissions that I rebuild.
Being a "LOGICAL CHEAPSKATE" I use the old fashioned "TYPE-F" automatic transmission fluid available most everywhere!
AutoZone / Advance Auto / O'Reilly's / NAPA / the MEIJER's Grocery store / SpeedWay gas stations / etc Etc ETC
I pay around $2.50 / quart and have had 100% reliability out of old fashioned "TYPE-F" automatic transmission fluid (for DECADES of USE)
I used it in my 1985 H-D FXR 1340 Evo & now I'm using it in my 1995 DYNA 1340 EVO
Bye the way - I ride from INDIANA to ONTARIO Canada quite often & put a LOT of miles & kilometers :-) on my bike
I just serviced the clutch after 10 years of riding & the "Friction" Clutch Discs are still within 'SPEC' = with no need to replace them
Just an old Gray Beard's opinion - why pay MORE when GENERIC will do ?
Getting ready to dump/change the primary the primary oil in my 2009 FLHT. Last change I used Rotella 15w40 dino. On hand to use now without leaving the house, I have: M1 15w50, M1 VT 20w50, M1 4T 10w40 and Mystik JT8 15w50 syn blend. Thoughts? I could just buy another Rotella 15w40 but some of the above should be fine. Thx
