While in LA this week for business, I stopped by a place called LA Motorcycles The GPS said it was a HD shop. It's actually an independent that specializes in HD. A little rough around the edges, but overall they seemed like a knowledgable crew.
Anyway, After a lot of discussion about my soon to be delivered 103CI Street Bob, one of the recommendations from the shop crew was to upgrade the oil pump to a Feuling Hi Flow oil pump. The advantages seem legitimate, but I was wondering if anyone has experience with quality, durability and performance.
16,000 miles ago, my local indy, installed all new Feuling cam chest parts and a new Feuling oil pump with S&S 510G cams. I have had absolutely NO problems with any of it. When I am cruising down the road at 28-3000 rpm, my oil pressure(according to the gauge) runs about 52. However, mine is a 2004 and I am sure the newer HD twin cam motors use a better oil pump.
Perhaps in High Performance built up motors there may be an advantage with Fueling pumps on the scavenging side of the pump. But Harleys depend on oil flow, not pressure as with some high performance car engines.
I have the original OEM pump in my bike. The very early original model, not the "updated" one. It runs a consistent 32 lbs over 2,000 rpm. The bike is 12 years old and just turned 120,300 miles this weekend. I still experience no oil loss between 5,000 mile changes.
It's a Stage II 95" S/E Road Glide.
So I want to ask, how much is enough? I'm quite pleased with the pump I've got!
Thanks guys. I agree that the scavenging has an advantage in higher performance engines. Mine will be 103 stage 2. I only asking because now is a good time to have it installed while the cams are going in. In my engine, the only real advantages are a) cooler oil, and b), les blow-back.
I've been looking at the SE version too. For $30 more that the Feuling, you get an upgraded cam plate along with the pump. Performance claims are similar. Still not sure if ill do it or not.
I have two more weeks to decide on options beyond what I've already selected. I'm trying hard to stay with practical items and leave decorative stuff for later.
