I'm back! 4K trip on my PA, my random thoughts...
So baseline for you all: I'm 6'1" maybe 6' in the evening
I'm right at 250lbs with a 33" jean inseam. Arm length is maybe a tad over average but not much, most times standard XL length works. I am wearing a 2XL Alpinestars Andes 3 jacket though, they do run small lol but length is fine on it, cinches right at my wrists.I did install the Rox Risers, I'm guessing 1 1/2" up and 1/2" back but could be 1 and 1
Standard seat in high position. I tried the Tallboy and didn't like it in high or low, seems narrower than standard to me.
I do NOT like the Harley seat, I will be getting a Russell Day Long.
I rode with the ***** of my feat on the pegs most of the time, I would hang my heals on them every once in a while but only to try and find a better position for my butt. I did stand up a bunch, about 85 was about as fast as I felt comfortable standing up and not having to grab the bars like I was hanging on for dear life lol.
I rode most of the time in Road mode, Sport a couple times in the twisties but not much at all. Rain mode 1/2 the time on the way home. All modes worked great, no issues at all and loved the flexibility. I did turn the TC off once just to show a buddy the front wheel does in fact come off the ground with relative ease.
I also installed the 18" windshield and found it good at diverting the air and I wasn't getting buffeting at all but still had flow to vent my top vents of my helmet. I will probably look at other windshields eventually but I'm fine with this for now, it did me well.
Now the fun stuff... any issues and how did it do?
Had my 1K service right before I left (actually had 890 on the clock) and the tech asked if my phone was charging while riding. I said yes because I saw the charging graphic when I started up so he said ok and that he didn't need to flash it. Long story short, I had to stop in Wichita Falls and have them flash it lol It showed charging when you flip the switch but as soon as you start the engine it stops charging, I guess we all know this now.
We stopped after running through the Black Canyon just west of Gunnison, CO to take in the views. I turned the switch and everything lite up fine but nothing happened when I hit the switch... tried kickstand up, down, in gear out of gear, clutch in, clutch out, pretty much every combination you could think of and nothing. One of us had the great idea of jump starting, don't do that as it WILL through a TC code. After a few mins, another buddy walked up and said "don't you turn this switch and push this button" and I'll be damned if it didn't start right up. Engine light was on and code for TC was new (I didn't know it at the time). We road into Gunnison and I started calling dealers to get me in. This is where I shoot the middle finger to Avalanche HD in Denver, they will never see a dime of my money and they truely missed out, ask Mile High. I had a guy with me who was changing out his entire wardrobe lol he must have bought half a dozen T shirts and a bag plus other stuff and the rest of us all had to have t-shirts and poker chips. I think we spent more here collectively than we did anywhere else to include Sturgis lol. Avalanche, 5 hours is waaaay to long to wait to call someone back ESPECIALLY when they talked to your service receptionist 3 times and are on the phone for 20 minutes. Mile High answered right a way and even got a tech on the phone when the service writer didn't know the answer.
Rode into Denver and Mile High HD, got in late so stayed next door at the hotel, supposed to stay in Colorado Springs that night so all good and setup closer to SD now.
So next morning they start looking... had the TC code, no worries, cleared and lesson learned... don't jump start the bike.
2nd code, not so good... catastrophic failure of the ECU. They called the mothership and they recommended that they replace. They cleared it, rode and it everything seemed fine. We decided I'd ride on and if it happened again the case would be open with the mothership. Mile High sent me on my way with paperwork...
No issues the rest of the way to Sheridan, WY via SD and nothing until after we left Sunday. We got to Colorado and the rain hit harder so I put it in Rain mode to get to just south of Ft Collins for the night. The next morning I switched back to Road mode while moving and I got a Triangle caution symbol. We stopped and I restarted and it went away. Rest of the trip home was uneventful mechanically, weather was another story... at least the rain in Texas wasn't cold, good thing cause we got soaked! The kind of rain that rain gear doesn't help lol
We covered a lot of terrain and weather, high 90's when we left, high 50's in parts of WY. Started at 10' above sea level and up to about 11,000. We averaged about 350 a day with a few shorter days while site seeing. 1500 mile trip home was 400, 500, 600 in cold and wet, this was my wife's 1st trip solo on her Freewheeler and I didn't want to push her too much. She did great considering the conditions on the way home, super proud of her.
For the most part the bike was great, couple of scary moments but everything worked out. I'm very happy with the bike, no regrets trading in the Road King.
If I can just get the seat situation sorted I will be 100%
I'm off to the dealer today for the 5K (June special for service so not waiting until i get 5K lol) and have them check again the ECU open ticket. New bike, new issues, happens all the time but I'm ok with that. I knew going in that their might be issues but willing to take the chance because it's what I wanted in a Harley.
Harley, I think you did a great job on the PA and another reason the PA should be considered is the dealer network. I proved that twice on my trip, thanks again Mile High in Aurora, CO and Red River HD in Wichita Falls, TC
Ride on my friends!
I'm 100% with you on the seat situation. It simply isn't comfortable after an hour or two. I'm looking at having a local shop refit with a denser foam and reshape it for me. I looked on the Day Long website but don't see any information on a seat for Pan America. Do you have other information? I'm partial to Corbin seats, but at this point, I will do anything other than stock. I'd kill to have something shaped more like this Corbin LiveWire seat:
A couple of weeks ago my bike failed to start after I stopped to pick up my mail at the post office. I tried a few obvious things... kickstand up/down. In gear, out of gear. Nothing. Thirty minutes later, when the bike was cold again, it started. On my way home the check engine light came on. Fault code 0000. The tech checked it out at the 1k service, but the ECM history didn't have any additional information. No issues since.

Had the 5K service done and check the reference number that the mothership created. Seems my ECU codes were chalked up to low battery issues (I ran the battery out when I first got it playing with modes etc). My local dealer did a complete diagnostic check and coordinated with the mothership and all seems right in the world.
Only have about 50 miles on it since picking it up but I should get some more miles this weekend to see if there are anymore issues.
The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
We did a lot of mountain twisty road riding and that was a blast. I think that a version of this this bike with 100% street tires and mag wheels, less suspension travel, and a bit more wind protection / aerodynamics would be a very good sport touring machine in the S1000XR type vein.
I have 300 miles on mine and it just shut off while riding when I checked the diagnostics screen I have the following
When I scrolled EHCU and selected it it showed
I checked the dip stick for oil and that was ok.
I let the bike sit for a few and decided to start it no check engine light no oil light no odd sounds . Limped it the 10 miles home. Will have it at the dealership first thing for them to check it out.
I can't find the code it threw on the web does anyone know what it means?
