Default Transmission Gear Oil

So while waiting for the repair on the transmission I started looking at gear oil. I know that there are a lot of different ideas regarding brands used. To date allI have ever used is HD straight 60. A buddy of mine has an S&S 93 with a Baker 6 and he uses BelRay 85w/140. He rides his Pan hard (doesn't beat it up tho). He swears by it in his tranny. Other brands that I have looked at/ started reading about...Red Line Heavy Shock Proof, Amsoil 75/110, Spector 70/145 & Lucas 85w/140. I really like the idea of the higher number for the "hot" range, and since I am using all Andrews gears in it I figured it would be worth the money to use a decent gear oil.

Any/all input/feedback welcome.

The factory book was written while gear oil was available

- but the factory book tells you to use motor oil in what ever straight weight you use in the engine in the trans -

reason it has brass in it - hi gear bushing - 1/ 2 under the gear as well as the 3 /4 under the gear - and in the lid shifting parts - early 3rd gear also had a bushing

gear oil eats the brass and causes 3 times the normal wear - but you buddy having a evo trans can use gear oil as nothing is brass in it

we use this 25 years and we do an easy75 4 speed and 3 with reverse thrown in as well gear boxes a year

Not all gear oil eats brass..

GL4 is okay GL5 is not but GL5 is more suitable to hypoid gear applications anyway

Question. Is it ok to use Synthetic 60W or just stick with Dino? Thanks

I never bought into amsoil but many have - racing taught me about zinc in oil is what you really need above all else

do not care what’s others use - my experience is what i have spent my money on and learned the hard what what and what does not work

the 60 we use is loaded with zinc and it does the job - when 100 customers have asked me what did you use in my bike i need to get t some of that

I have found on old Car engines oil consumption increases dramatically with full synthetic oil, wouldn't surprise me if the same thing happened on an old clunker Harley too. I checked the oil in one of my cars mid season, the PO had put royal purple in it prior to me buying it. I was down 10 liters out of 18 I thought it leaked out! At the time I wasn't able to run out and get more of what was in it and I had conventional 20W50 on hand. Some oil is better than no oil so in it went. I drove that car the rest of the season with no noticeable consumption and then changed the oil the following spring to a conventional oil and haven't had an issue.

someone ran it dry but added Slick 50 so everything is OK.
Just throw in 4 quarts in and get out there.
