Default Ballpark figure?

OK all you pan guys. I've been riding for allot of years and my first Harley was a Pan. Lately I've had a bug up my butt to get another but have not been actively pursuing it.

Just got a call from a co-worker of mine and he is in a bar in NY and met a guy that's got a 55 he's wantin to sell.

I had him send me this pic of it and I briefly talk to the person that owns it.

Owner tells me he's had it for 35 years and it's a strong running 1 kicker. He says it's puttin out about 96 inches. I will be passing through the town the guy lives in next week and plan on stopping to have a look.

As much as I hate this kind of questions on this Forum I'm asking for input as to what you think a ballpark amount would be for this Scooter?

I know I haven't provided much info but assuming it is solid mechanically. I'm no concerned about the cosmetics right now. Base on the picture I kind of like it the way it looks.

Here is a link to the only picture I have right now. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e.../55paninNY.jpg

When I asked him what he was looking to get out of it he said around 10 Grand which to me sounds fair but I haven't kept up with the Pan market so for all I know it could be high could be low.

Any input would be appreciated.

I have to say, I am not really sure how much a 55 pan is worth but 10G's sounds really high to me.

It's really up to you on how bad do you want one. I would not pay that much for one that has been modified into a stroker (96 inches). Remember this bike is 54 years old and a stroker motor would put a lot of strain on everything. Also I would not buy one unless I got to closely inspect it, check the numbers and paperwork. I got the bug a few years ago and bought a Frankenpan, a 57 in a 67 frame. It lasted 740 miles before the seats fell out of the head. Pulling it apart showed lots of abuse and modifications. So buyer beware. Probably a better choice would be to buy a replica with an S&S motor. Atleast you could ride it and expect it to be reliable.

I do have allot of experience with pans. Along with owning one way back when, I did quite a bit on work on them when I was a Harley wrench 20 years ago and agree that 96" is pushing it with a factory motor and does concern me a bit.

After I posted this I jumped on Ebay and found a handful from 51-63 that are pretty much stock and running around the same price area. Granted they are all still active auctions. I'll check em later and see what they actually went for.

Thanks for the input.

I'd agree that's a bit steep. Being 96' would scare me away. I'd just keep looking around, you'll find one eventually that's right for you. Seems like the 48 and 65s are bringing the most money right now generally.

Mine is a one kick also, just not sure which one.

You can do a lot better. I just completed a search to find my '59 and you should be able to get a very nice, mostly original (other than paint) panhead for between $11k and $15k, depending on how nice it is.

For example (asking prices):
1962 - beautiful (with tour pack!) $15k
1959 - (needed electronic iginition installed) $14k
1958 - (stunning) $17k
1955 - $11.5k
1965 - (looked complete) - $14.5k

Those are just off the top of my head and are all bikes that are either running and beautiful now or would be with minimal work. If you want a project, there are even better bargains around. Check Walneck's, Cycle Trade and Craigslist. There are a lot bikes out there now.

I know this is an older thread but I thought I'd throw in my two cents, I also think the bike in question is a little pricey, I picked up a 49 pan last fall in Myrtle Beach for 6500.00 Thats running but will be getting a facelift this winter. Good luck on your pan quest.
