Default Hand shift conversion

I have a very low mile 1984 Softail standard.

Since It has a kick start, I'm making this a very vintage appearing bike with an Indian style leafspring front end, pogo seat conversion and a 39 Knuck paint scheme along with some panhead rocker covers. Should be confusing to onlookers.

I was hoping to convert to a hand shift as well but this conversion kit says it works with all 4 speed transmissions up to 1984 except softail.

Any reason I couldn't convert an 84 FXST to a hand shift? I would think any 4 speed could be converted.

I posted this in the transmission tech area but I may need help from the "oldtimers" on this one.

Thanks

All that you showed from the ebay site was your linkage for a hand shift. You need to replace the shifter on top of your tranny to a hand shift as well. You can find more info if you google antiquecyclesupply, or J&P cycles, you will be able to do it, just remember left turns are a bitch.

That makes sense. I wonder why they specified it wouldn't work for softail though.

Left hand turns are fun

I had a 48 UL with left hand shift and right hand throttle and a 39 Indian with right hand shift and left hand throttle at the same time.

Now that's interesting jumping on one when you've been riding the other for a while.

This motor is cammed up and has head work running about 95 Horse.

That may be more dangerous than anything with a hand shift.

You only live once I guess. Gotta do it.
