Default Nothing but trouble!

After my 49 Pan munched a valve I bought new cylinders, pistons, rings, and a complete valve job with all new valves, guides, springs, seals, and seats.

Got it put together on Sunday. Problem is, I've noticed that the front pan has two bumps in it. Not down but up. From the inside where the push rods engage with the rocker arms. WTF!!! This is only on the front one. I've already made sure that the push rods were adjusted properly. Have owned the bike for 30 years so I have plenty of experience at it.

When I picked up the heads, I was told that they milled off .012. Would this be causing my trouble? I wouldn't think so. Any ideas? Please feel free to give me your input.

You talking about "bumps" in your rocekr covers? That is from valve lift. Milling the heads will not cause that. Did you change cams as well (as in higher llift)? When they did the valves how deep did they have to cut the seats?

Yep! Bumps on the front rocker cover. Back shows no sign of this.

In hindsight, I do remember that I did not have to lower the adjustment on the lifters very little to install the pushrods on the front cylinder. Having owned the bike for thirty years, I recall always having to crank them all the way down to get the pushrods in. Not now.

I did nothing to the lower end. No new cam.

New seats on both heads. I assume cut minimally.

Outside of valve seats being cut too deep (which would raise the rocker arm as engine turns a bit higher) only other thing I am wondering is if you changed the type of vlalve cover gasket. Maybe went from cork to paper (and they make the paer ones in different thickness as well. There is not a lot of room inside the cover so it doesn't take much change to do that.

Think I would ask the indie who did the work. Not a lot of pan motors going through shops today so they should remember your heads.

Thank you for the reply panz4ever, but the opposite would be true. The valve seats are not cut deep at all, which means that the valve would be lower into the combustion chamber and the opposite end of the rocker would be higher, thus more prone to hit the rocker cover.

The bumps in my rocker cover are only on the front one. After measuring the distance from top of lifter to top of cup that the pushrod sits in, The distance is 3/16" greater on the front intake than the back intake. This, to me, indicates that the valve seats were not cut as deep on the front head as the rear, or for some strange reason, shorter valves were used in the front head.

I will be photographing, measuring, and documenting as I disassemble my top end. Again.
