The S&S E is just a modern day version of the S&S B which is just a modern version of the Linkert.
What is your starting sequence? Ran S&S on all my old pans and never had a problem. Switched out my brother-in-laws 50 pan from a Zenith to a B-carb....2 cold 1 igniton on and she fires right up.
well my starting sequence goes something like this. give it two -three primer squirts, kick through with the throttle held wide open four -five times, key on. maybe get a pop or two. repeat for twenty minutes or so, the coughs get a little longer until she fires. if I don't hold throttle wide open, she doesn't even pop. seems like she floods real easy but that seems to be the only way she wants to start and so I clear her out. I have checked the spark and it seems o.k. for what you can watch and trying to kick her over. maybe cap. is getting weak? the engine will not idle when cold for nothing. not until she warms up. I thought the s&s was a modern version of the bendix. I was thinking of going back to one, because I never had problems with those. maybe the carb is defective? I don't know! by the way I do close throttle when I turn key on for the start kick. never had this problem from my 72 xlch. If that one didn't start on the first or second key on kick then something was wrong

Have you checked for intake leak? With the S&S I would assume you have the o-ring manifold. How old are the rubber o-rings.
Never used an E Carb, just the B Carb, but it is/can be easy to flood them if you prime it too much I usually do my kick through first, then the prme (2X) with ignition off. Then ignition on, take to top of stroke, throttle 1/4 open, choke 1/2 open, then kick through and follow through and generally starts up on first or second kick at most. As soon as she fires choke is off.
Thinking outside of maifold leak, all that gas going into the system can make it run like $hit at idle when cold. How is it on hot starts?
That said if the Bendix works for you it doesn't take much to change it out.
I checked for intake leaks when I first got her home. no leaks. but I was going to change 'o' rings sometime this year. tried her again this afternoon and found out something. I have been kicking through from 9-10 o clock on pedal. hurt my knee so thought I would kick with my left leg and only kicked from about 6-8 o clock and she fired up easily and only the second kick. but I still kicked key off and throttle wide open for four kicks before the key on tries. Will keep learning her. And your right Tbone the new ones don't have any soul.
