Default ok now what?

so sumpun confusing. new points and cond. said to fit 70 to 78 cone motor. no problem there. reset timing and dwell or really gap, because I didn't use a dwell meter( he-he) young uns won't even know what that is! anyway pan would not fire. advanced timing clear up to 3/16" of full advance on the plate and she fired. took her out and she ran better than ever and sounded like Harley's of old. idles better too. what the hell is going on? could my timer be installed a tooth off? still doesn't make sense. because I timed to the book with mark centered in window and points just coming open when plate advanced with test light. I know I'm way advanced. but no kick back and runs strong. Help me understand this! checked advance weights and they advance as the point cam rotates clockwise. and I moved the plate counter clockwise to advance. O.K. so I've had a few beers( ok, more than a few) and I can't handle it like when I was younger. but still, this has me confused. even the cone motor guys can step into this one please

Hi John. I think I have it figured out. No it is auto advance. I was using a clymer book and it said if you have auto adv. to use the timing mark in the middle of the window. But looking up old posts I learned that it should be in the right side of the window. just by chance I advanced the plate and she straightened up and purred. so I was thinking it was way advanced before and that was why the bucking. but after reveiwing it all, I had her way retarded. anyway, still haven't actually set the timing but she runs so well now, probably won't mess with it till next tune up or something pops up. whats funny is that the timing plate was off when I bought this bike. She starts so much better. Actually like most of you all on the hd forum said a pan should start with a s&s e. no more kicking her for 15-20 minutes. starts on the second or third kick at the most. sounds better and runs great. So thanks every one for all the info I received here, even if from old posts!. to answer your question, the timer is an after market with no i.d. tag on it. and doesn't look like anything in the book. found out the points are the same as early cone motor points sets.
