Default Necessary to clear?

Thinking about replacing the emblem on my Super Glide tank with a decal. I've read several posts, and they all clearcoat over decals. Just wondering if it is absolutely necessary to clear? I'm guessing yes, to protect the decal from the elements, but thought I'd ask . Thanks

The main reason for clearing over the decals is if its not coated and you happen to spill fuel on one it will destroy the decal. Clear coating them will protect them from the fuel as well as the elements and make them easier to wax over.

Ok, thanks. Seems no matter how careful I try to be, I sometimes manage to do that.
