Default high temp powder

I took some things off my bike to have powdered black. One was the heat shields which I wanted in high temp black. I was told it is a flat color which is fine. I just saw them the other day and the powder coat is not smooth at all, all orange peel. The guy who coated them said the high temp stuff does not lay flat. Is this true?

No that's not true. It lays just like regular powder. And for the record, you can get hi temp in gloass black as well as flat black. And also for the record, regular powder will hold up just fine on heat shields.

Powder is wonderful when applied correctly and a nightmare if done incorrectly. I learned the hard way and decided I didn't like powder because of the way it would twist under a washer or start coming off and sometimes just peel in sheets. I found out its all in application and prep. Joes done stuff for me and its tough as nails.

High temp powder does have a bit of a texture to it... but for the most part does lay very smooth... here is a header pipe done in high temp flat black and some heat shields we recently did in our reguar flat black. hope this helps

you can see it does have a slight texture... this is because full cure does not happen until the part reaches operation temps... regular heat shields will never come close to the 700* that it typically requires.

Joe,

So I got another question on this topic. I realized today that powder coat has to cure or get high temp version. Is there a gloss black high temp?

I had my rocker covers done in Gloss and I basically ruined them when I touched them. I also had them done inside and out, which I'm now thinking is a problem as when it got full running temp it started pushing oil out the gaskets.
when i torqued it I can see it mashed the coating on the seal edge.

I know I need to get them redone and not do the seal edge or inside but will a regular coating ever cure and not get soft when heated or is there a higher temp coating to go with?

Thanks for any advice.

your rockers should come no where near reaching a temp that could cause harm to the powder... sounds like something was really wrong! You should never coat the entire box either that will cause sealing and fitment issues. we stock a few sets of rockers so that we can do exchange programs for HDF members. I have a set in stock right now that we can coat in any color you would like and get shipped out to you... you will not have any issues with them... here are some pics of some of the rockers we have done this month. Fell free to PM me any questions

you do not want to do your rockers in high temp, they will not come close to reaching the operation temp that the high temp powder needs to cure. but there is a gloss high temp, it is more of a 60% gloss if you ask me. but still very clean. that is on the thunder header pictured at the very bottom and the 2 tone sport bike muffler/header

Joe,

I also noticed that when I torqued down the covers that they chipped a little around the bolt/washer. It was danm below freezing temperatures here and the powder was thick too. I've noticed that some of the factory stuff has the bole ares milled outto avoid this. Have you ever had any issues with that?

I'm considering your offer alot. Have you done anthing with special coloring? I've seen some places that have some cool effects that look like black chrome. That is what I would really love for all my side covers, or actual black chrome.

Thanks for your response.

if the powder started to chip then the powder was completely done wrong... we have done all kinds of different custom colors for customers in the past. sky is the limit when it comes to color and finish! but our powder WILL NOT CHIP. we cure our powder correctly and are very attentive in our prep work.
