Default Primary Case Oil Capacity?

I have a 2013 Road King CVO I just purchased (used with 6K miles). My manual calls for 1.4 qts. I drained at least 1.25 qts, and refilled the primary to where I could see the oil (close to it gushing out the derby cover). It took 1 qt. period. What's up? I changed from Syn3 that the dealer put in to Red Line Primary Oil. Seems to perform better (clutch is smoother). I'm guessing that the dealer overfilled it at the 5000 mile service for the previous owner?

Are you doing this on the sidestand?

If so it'll run out way before you get the correct amount in.

Default Primary Lube capacity

My manual calls for 38 Oz. I always put 1 qt in. I've got 24,000 miles on my SE compensator and just took it apart. It looked like new. I also just had a inner primary seal failure and there was oil slinging everywhere. I'd say a qt is plenty.

The amounts given in HD manuals are for completely drained and dry components. I've always found that upon rebuild the cases have taken somewhat less than stated.

The correct procedure is to fill to the specified level, which applies to all three holes. The amounts of oil specified are for guidance only IMHO. Even on a dry build I wouldn't simply pour in the specified amount.

I just re-did my primary fluid on my bike(I had the entire primary case off the bike). I put in exactly 38 oz as my manual specifies and it didn't leak out. It was pretty close to leaking out when it was on the side stand.

That's a handy link for a 2013. If I was to follow that Factory guidance, if'in I had a 2013, it would be the first time i was to remove the battery cable to check\add primary oil... And what's up with adding 7 more ounces IF you remove the inspection cover?? Does HD expect that's how much will run out when initially filled?

Red, you might like these:

The difference in primary oil amounts is because one accounts for a "dry" primary.
