Primary/Transmission/Driveline/ClutchFind answers to general powertrain, primary and transmission. Have clutch issues and need suggestions? Post them here.
I have a minor amount of rub from the starter ring gear on the inner primary. See pic. Any concerns? What would cause this?
i am replacing the main shaft seal and new clutch so just seen it. My thoughts are a worn bearing which I was replacing anyway since I was there anyway.

Witness marks behind where the clutch sits will indicate you chain tensioner tightened up and the chain was pulling the sprocket enough to cause it to rub, thus probably jacking the IPB and inner race.

yep. i just got to the primary bearing and lets just say there is about 600 pieces more that came out then went in orignally.
had a dealership put a clutch and bearing in this bike at around 6000 under warranty due to a noise, i dont remember what they told me they did just that they had replaced the bearing and race. looks like the snap ring has been blocking the oil port all this time. bearing wasnt giving me any noise but the witness marks were first sign to dig in, i rolled the bearing in the housing with my finger and it started to crumble. tried to press out the bearing and the shoulders disentgrated, now i am trying to cut out the race with a dremel, which is not going well so stopped to see how much a inner primary is going to cost me.
glad i caught it now, this could of been catastrophic.

This has been an issue with the automatic primary chain tensioner since the beginning. It applies too much tension and pulls the main shaft in too much wearing out the bearing.
We and many other manufactures offer a manual chain adjuster, as to avoid these issues. Ours is the AAA or armored attitude adjuster.

ok so its going backwards to the pre-07 tensioner.
mid have to change out my outer primary over than to allow for regular adjustments then? Correct?
We do sell a bully cover to solve that problem, but it is a bit expensive. My recommendation to people is that when you change the primary fluid, just pull the outer cover and check the tension. Just like the old days, you want 5/8" to 7/8" of free play.
Weren't there hydraulic (automatic) adjusters a couple years ago?
ive only ever know of the manual and the spring loaded ones from 07 up.
I didnt mind the manual ones. If chain was slapping took 5 min to adjust.
mused to check it on every oil change
