Default Question about motor sprocket

I've got a question that I think I know the answer to, but wanted opinions from people who know more than me. This is not a debate on compensator vs solid. If I put a solid motor sprocket on and went a different teeth count, would I need to calibrate the speedometer? I'm thinking not since the speed sensor is on the transmission and that's not changing. What do the experts of HDF say?

Actually it does matter.

Changing the motor sprocket size changes the ratio between the crankshaft and the transmission...

From my understanding if you change it at the motor sprocket then no need to change the speedometer. If you change the transmission pulley, or rear wheel pulley then yes.

But would that change the speedometer calibration?

Changing the primary sprockets won't effect the speedo reading but if you have a later 6 speed with will effect any gear indicator you have.

Is the gear indicator a combination of engine rpm and ground speed?

Well sort of.. It compares engine RPM to vehicle speed measured at the gearbox. That ratio changes when you change the primary gearing.

2014 Limited. I'm thinking about replacing my compensator with the Darkhorse sprocket and going with the 32 tooth for a little more low end.

Got it. I've never made that change, but have heard good things that compensator. If you go through with it please come back and give us some feedback and thoughts about it. Good luck.
