Default Fluid Change ?s for Newbie

Well, today I decided to change the fluids in my scoot, primary, trans, and oil. I grabbed my service manual and tools b/c this was the first time I had ever wrenched on anything in my life. From the experience, I have several questions:

1. How much fluid do I put in the primary case? The manual says 32 ozs, but after about 22 ozs, it looked really full, and I didnt want to overfill. Is this ok?
2. It was inevitable, but I spilled oil on the garage floor. How can I clean this up? I did my best with some shop towels, but it didnt seem to work real well.
3. Since there was oil on the floor, I managed to get some on my tires. How do I clean this? I dont want to try to ride, and go down. Any suggestions.
4. The service manual calls for 32 ozs of tranny fluid, but I only managed about 28 ozs. Is this ok?

This is all the ?'s for now, but I am sure that some more will come along. Thanks for the replies. Please bear with me while I continue to learn.

Matthew

1. The primary on mine holds 32 oz. The manual shows a diagram of where the fluid shold come to on the clutch basket ring, and you can check it pretty good if you get a flashlight and look down inside. I just do the 32 oz that the manual calls for and have had no problems.

2. For the spill on the floor, try spraying it with a little brake fluid cleaner. That should get up the oil and leave no reside.

3. Clean your tires good with soap and water, or an automotive tire cleaner.

4. Most transmissions require 22 to 24 oz of fluid, but since you have the 06 Dyna with the 6 speed it must use more. I would only fill to the level mark on the dip stick. If it is overfilled, it will probably blow out of the vent line.

Regards,

Bill

If you try to fill the primary while the bike is leaning over on the stand, you won't get 32 ozs in there. It'll spill out and create a mess on your floor. Get a piece of 2x4 or a rock and put it under the kickstand to stand the bike up straight. Then you can add the full 32ozs.

In regards to the filling the primary, I changed mine a few weeks back and added the full 32oz. The first time I rode the bike, I found some fluid spray on the rear footpeg. I checked for leaks and made sure the gasket was snug and it was. If the primary is overfilled, is there a breather that it will blow out? Just curious cause I havent seen it leak since. This might help Matt out if he has the same thing happen. Thanks.

Thanks for the help. I took the tip, and propped the bike up on a 2x4. I was able to put almost the whole bottle in. I think its time for me to go to sears and get a stand. Thanks again.

Sears has 2 different stands. One is $90 and one is $160.
I opted for the more expensive one as a few people had complained about the cheaper red one bleeding down. Do a search on stands and you will find any available info.

Get some oil dry for starters and I've been very impressed with PJ1 Supercleaner. It really works well cleaning around the oil filter area.

You can also get a gallon of Denatured Alcohol at Home Depot or OSH, etc. Pour a bit of that on the floor and wipe it up. No more oil. I find this stuff is stronger than rubbing alcohol but not as macho as brake cleaner.
