Default Primary Chain Tensioner

I started working on replacing my clutch pack and replacing the drive belt today. Smooth repair/replace but ran into a big issue. I am glad I caught this. After removing the primary chain tensioner I was looking it over. The grooves from the chain aren't too deep and it could have been reused. I wiped it down and noticed what looked like a seem going across the shoe. It looked like a weld seem. I rubbed my nail across it and my nail caught on it. Weird since I was riding today something like this if it was would be worn and smooth. I started wiggling the shoe a little and look what happened.

My question is this, now that I need to replace the primary chain tensioner, what are you guys using and should I go with manual or automatic?

Another vote for the Hayden. Made shifting into first gear alot quieter. A nice product for being one of the cheapest options. Just make sure you put the shoe on the right way if you or anyone else goes with the Hayden.

FWIW: Looking through my records I find that I put the Hayden in my '85 FXRS 20 years and 225,000 mi. ago. It's still in there. In that time, I've replaced one shoe..."just because", and found one of the tensioning springs broken while I was in the Primary chaincase for something else. The broken spring was still in position. Nothing got loose to cause any problems.

Aren't the Hayden product model/design/implementation for your 1985 bike and his 2016 completely different? Not seeing how you can extrapolate your results with one design to another.

I have been using the manual Baker adjuster since 2012 with no problems. The screaming eagle manual one looks pretty good too.

I have no idea how Hayden’s product is designed for a 2016 bike, that’s why I made it a point to identify the one I am riding.

I recently replaced the stock auto tension on my 2011 Ultra with a Hayden. Bike only had 13000 miles. Chain was VERY tight with stock tensioner. This is my 4th Hayden on different bikes. No problems so far.
