Primary/Transmission/Driveline/ClutchFind answers to general powertrain, primary and transmission. Have clutch issues and need suggestions? Post them here.
I just bought an 09 Road King with 8500 miles, it makes the oddest bang or clang when shifting. I can also hear it sometimes when i release the clutch or when I go from coasting to pulling or vice versa.
my 04 never made this noise. Hard to believe anything would be wrong with 8500 miles but who knows.
Thoughts?
I'm gonna check my primary chain tension just to be sure, but it's probably just the difference between the 5 speed and the 6 speed. Again, hard to believe anything is bad yet with only 8500 miles but anything is possible, it is a Harley.

This makes me think its not the normal clunk when shifting.
I'd start with the basic stuff. Check the trans fluid and primary levels, adjust the clutch by the book.
I changed all the fluids to the proper levels so it's not that, and it could be the clutch adjustment on the basket itself, but it sounds to me like the shift fork inside the tranny. I'll check the primary chain and the clutch adjustment before I get too excited. If it still does it I'll take it to my local Indy for a test drive and see what he thinks.
Could very well be a messed up comp, but you should be able to check it out when you pull the primary cover and have look around at the chain and tensioner and stuff.
Rode it again the other day and determined you don't have to shift to make it clang, just rolling on or off the throttle will do it, gotta be the compensator. I'll tear it apart this weekend hopefully, been cold here for too long!
