I just bought my first HD (Street Bob) and would like to do all the work on it myself.
Could anyone please list some of the more common tools you need to work on your HD.
You should first start looking the tools some tool kits have. As example, in the CruzTools web, you can see the basic tools of their kits. This is one good starting point.
Later, I would get a good torque wrench and what I do is that when I have to do any work in my bike, first of all I look if I would need any special tool, and I buy it.
So, you'll have just the tools you need, what is better and cheaper than buying a lot of tools which you aren't going to use.
If you are planning to do your own work, another esential thing is a good lift.
...and remember that the good tools cost money, but if are good they will last for ever.
The first thing you need is an official Harley service manual. Not a POS Clymer one. It will pay for itself many times over. A good set of basic tools will do a lot on your scoot. Combination end wrenches, the racheting kind are great, socket set, screwdrivers, pliers, a volt/ohm meter for electrical issues, a lift is nice for changing tires, brakes, etc. Buy the best tools you can afford. Spend too much money on them. You can never have too many. Hope this helps.
Most of the tools needed for basic maintenance can be accomplished with Allen and Torx sockets.
Harley shop manual (as already stated)
3/8" torx socket set (make sure T27 is in the set)
3/8" Allen socket set
3/8' male socket screw driver for the above sockets
0-250 inch-lbs torque wrench
Harley oil filter wrench
Small Snap ring pliers
VOM
And the basics
Good screw driver set
Basic 3/8" socket set, ratchet, 3" and 6" extensions
Open/closed spanner wrenches
Needle nose pliers
Thanks heaps for all your recommendations.
I am not going to skimp and going to buy some Snap On tools.
I have some metric Snap-on tools which are still like new after 10 years of use.
