clutch on 1986 softail

clutch on 1986 softail
just got a softail and the guy I got it from said the clutch needs adjusting how do you do it? I have wrenched on my shovel 1975 and adjusted clutch. this clutch is different the adjuster on the cable is maxed out, what can I do? is It hard to do? take the primary cover off and then what?

no its not slipping hard to shift into 1st wants to keep creeping when clutch is pull in, and almost impossible to get in netural when bike is running but the cable adjuster is maxed out and there is no extra play than should be on clutch lever

You might want to start by loosening the nut at the center of the clutch hub Inside the nut is the adjusting screw turn that screw CCW to let some of the pressure off the clutch Now use the clutch cable adjuster to get the clutch lever to the end of the perch Now tighten the nut See what that does I like the clutch to release when the clutch lever is half way in The next step is to disassemble the entire clutch system Check the inner clutch hub for cracks around the area where it keys to the trans main shaft I've seen several over the years Get a good service manual for that clutch system
