It's normal, we all have it to some degree. You can install the IDS pulley system and or run a nice synthetic gear oil and it will reduce the noise.

In the 6 speed transmissions, 5th gear always sounds a littly "whiny." It is the difference between the helical cut and straight cut gears. 1st and 5th gears are straight cut gears and the 2,3,4, and 6 gears are helical cut. It was done for longevity reasons as 5th gear is going to be used more than 6th unless on the open highway, but does make it a bit noisier. They changed the 5th gear in the 2010 tranny's due to people complaining about it.

For some reason I thought 3rd and 5th were straight cut gears, I will check the parts manual.

Straight cut gears are stronger, yet HD changed them due to people complaining, I'd rather have stronger myself, go figure.

Default 1st Gear too??

I noticed the whistling noise in 1st gear too, is this the same type of noise? if I throttle up to 15-20 mph and release the throttle without shifting up to 2nd and clutch released I hear a rather load whistle.
