fifth gear noise

Redline Shockproof, I also went to the 68 tooth sporster rear sprocket to help 6th gear pull better thus not needing 5th gear as much.

5th gear is noisier because of the design of the gears and they way they mesh ( 5th gear on a 6 speed, 4th on a 5 and 3rd on a 4 are stronger than the top gear and used for pulling, passing etc.).
You can try a fix in a bottle, but you may find that it is just a part of the animal.
of course is this is a new noise that wasn't there few weeks ago, then further investigation is called for.
there are few things more surprising than the tranny locking up

Like posted above, if the noise isn't "new", don't worry about it. 5th is a straight cut gear and has "gear whine". It's normal and as it should be. The only cure is helical cut gears that Harley went to in, I believe, '11. They are quieter, but not as strong.

I use Mobil 1 75- 140 Gear Oil in my transmission.
Helps some.
Also put an IDS on the rear pulley.
Together they helped quieten things down lots.

The Redline made a big difference in mine .... but as others have stated the noise is caused by the way fifth gear is cut ( Genius' at H.D. ) and it really is nothing to worry about. If you're really concerned go out get a 2010 or later bike ( They finally fixed the problem )
