Primary/Transmission/Driveline/ClutchFind answers to general powertrain, primary and transmission. Have clutch issues and need suggestions? Post them here.
Ok, please bare with me. I have looked hard for more information but i am not finding what I really want as for information.
The question I have is this;
I need to replace my shift lever that is between the primary and transmission on an 04 Ultra Classic. I have the needed tools like sockets, breaker bar, and various other hand tools. Manual says I need the primary drive lock tool which i will have real soon. What other special tool will I need? I do not believe it mentions any other tool to remove that primary to access the shift lever. I may be wrong. Has anyone else made this repair and what should I expect.
I am mechanically able, have most tools but I want to know is there anything that will be a problem area.
Make sure you follow the shop manual, be on the lookout for left hand threaded nuts.
Compensator nut is standard thread.
Be sure to install the lever, and make sure it is in the correct position before you re install the primary cover, and make sure you get the bolt tight
Thanks for the advice, the only thing I have failed to do so far is mark the position of the lever prior to removal. But I will check it before complete install of inner primary.
This connection is such a pain-in-the-butt. I know of more than one that is running around loose and in need of fixing....but it's he!! to get too and people just ride them loose as long as they will shift. Another HD built-in problem. Make sure you get some grade 8 hardware and use thread locker on the bolt. I have seen them with the lever tightened down as far as it will go until it closes...then won't tighten anymore and still is loose. Make sure your lever clamps the shaft real well. This can happen if you run it loose for long enough and wear the knurls off the lever or the shaft. Fix it while you in there the first time and if it takes a new lever to be sure...it's worth the money not to have to go back in there.
Well it came out good so far. Really was not as complicated as I thought but some of the aggrivating stuff like one broken bolt in the front. I had to remove the inner primary and and drill/tap out the bolt. I went ahead and purchased all new bolts and what a difference it makes when you torque them down.
I also adjusted the clutch while i was there. I will do a longer test ride tomorrow and verify no problems.
Thanks for the advice.
