Primary/Transmission/Driveline/ClutchFind answers to general powertrain, primary and transmission. Have clutch issues and need suggestions? Post them here.
I've had it with the clutch and tranny problems with my 88 flhtp. I have spent thousands on both at dealer and bike shops only to have the same thing happen over and over. First, bike starts pulling when at a stop, second, the trans or clutch will start slipping during hard or moderate acelerations. I have all screaming eagle parts installed : heads, cam, mukuni 42 flatside, high top forged pistons, all done at dealer, and i still can't get more than a thousand miles before "Bam" either a sheared keyway, a busted basket, or some other clutch problem. Everywhere I go the bike is called a bastard year because no solution is offered for the problem. You can't but a six speed trans, there aren't any Beefed up clutches out there, no open primaries. Look, I'm done crying, but I like my bike, I built it from the ground up (thanks ebay) and have rode it from Mount Rushmore to the mildewed planks of Atlantic city. I've had 3 wives and just one Harley, so you can guess who's not going anywhere. I'm turnning to you guys for help. Can I put a different trans and primary on my bike to get away from the keyed model or is there finally a solution for this head ache. Pickup trucks are made for carrying suzuki's.
I have almost 80000 miles on my FXRPolice. The clutch was hammered by the CHP for 40000 miles, then I got the bike into my hands and added power to the motor.
NEVER had a problem.
I put in kevlar discs 20 years ago, still running them.
I've adjusted the clutch per the manual a few times over the years, but if the 88 is the worst clutch ever, then I won the lottery.
Sorry you are having such trouble, maybe if you put your city in your profile, someone can suggest a great tech.
The transmission cannot slip. If anything is slipping, it is the clutch.
If you really want to get away from the tapered shaft/keyway type clutch, then you need to change out the gearset with one from a `90 or later, or install an aftermarket 6 speed transmission. This will allow you to change to a later model clutch which uses a splined hub.
You can find late model 5 speed gearsets on ebay all the time.
By the way, I put over 115,000 miles on an `89 clutch (same as an `88) without a problem.
