Default Oil tank/pump question

Thinking of installing a 2001 FLHT trans in a 82 FXR. Talked to Mike at Primo/Rivera and he said their motor plate would bolt to the shovel and this trans but he doesen't think it will fit in my frame (diden't say why). The frames look the same but I don't have one here to see for sure. Anyway, next issue is the oil tank. Will my S&S shovel oil pump pull oil from this under the trans engine oil reservor? or does it need to be gravity fed? I don't remember seeing a oil tank this low on any old custom build.
Thanks.

The EVO pumps pull the oil up out of the pan just fine. I see no reason why the Shovel pump will not do the same.

As far as the fit, I think the main consideration may be the inner primary. You are going to have to come up with one that will fit the 2001 tranny side and the Shovel bolt pattern on the front. If you can work this out, Harley did alter the bolt pattern on the 2001 model-year inner primary. A TC 2001-2005 will work with the 2001 tranny, but the TC 2000 and 1999 will not bolt up. They moved some mounting holes about 1/8-1/4 of an inch for some stupid reason.

So....if you get far enough to figure out it may fit....be sure to get an inner for the 2001-2005 model year....not a 99 or 00. I personally think it's going to be a bigger chore than it's worth and you would be better off with a stock tranny for the year of your Shovel, E-bay often has some pretty good deals on transmissions.

I have had some experience with cross-breeding parts from various model years and it can be a real PITA. In the long run...I think you will be better off with stock parts that fit your model.

Good luck!

I may be missing something, but how are you going to bolt the 01 tranny directly to the BACK of the '82 shovelhead motor? ( like a twin cam motor does...)

I am in the same boat. I knew they made an adapter plate to install a TC in an EVO frame with the split tranny/motor connection. I am just assuming there must be some sort of adapter plate that will do it the other way around...I DON'T know either!

All I know is that it sounds like a heap of trouble to do.
