a service manual will talk about it some.. pinwal cycle on ebay has 2 setups for sale. it was an over engineered bad idea,an open chain worked fine for a long time and still does.the thought was to stop the chain from throwing oil everywhere,it didn't work, that is why harleys use belts now

Yea it trips oil all over the place... And supposedly a pain to take the rear wheel off... I'm looking to do away with the enclosure and just run an open chain on the bike but I jace heard it oils the chain through the primary and then I have heard that it doesn't so I'm not sure... And I don't want to experiment and find out it really does ya know?

It has nothing to do with the primary,it's self contained. It was a good idea kept the chain clean and lubed, made the chain last a lot longer.Take the screws out put some silicone sealer on the aluminum primary and tighten it back up,it's usually the bottom piece. The trick is not to tighten it much.Take it off if you want and, sell it,some still see the benefit.

Thanks for the info... Do you know what it would take to convert it to a belt drive?

i read the inner primary and rear wheel is a little different.i bet you could just bolt a newer primary, belt setup, and rear wheel on.i just saw a page for a company that sells a belt conversion, you have to grind the transmission and inner primary to make room for the front pulley.it looked just like a current flht..i would just take the covers off and run an open chain..
