Primary/Transmission/Driveline/ClutchFind answers to general powertrain, primary and transmission. Have clutch issues and need suggestions? Post them here.
I have done my own Maint. for yrs. and have never done this Stupid thing b-4. I changed all 3 holes on my "04" Ultra and forgot to fill Primary with oil. Rode it for 5 miles, parked at the store and rode 5 miles home and noticed the quart of oil that was supposed to be in the primary on the floor with cap still on. What damage could I have done ? So much for doing it myself huh ? Bikes got about 19,000 well cared for miles on it. (until now!) Any suggestions ?
The clutch pack will be fine, the plates were already wet and you were most likely not shifting constantly. The only types of damage I usually see when this occurs is some additional wear on the shoe as Bob said, and a clutch basket bearing being damaged (but remember that is only spinning when you have the clutch pulled and in the mileage you drove I doubt you damaged it. I would fill it and run it.
No further than you ran 5 miles, stop. then 5 miles back. hardly enough time to bring to operating temp. I seriously doubt that there was any harm done. probably enough lube on the chain, so there was minimal shoe wear, if any. Live and Learn.
Only 10 miles maybe the primary chain tensioner, you can pull the inspection cover and look at that.
19k miles on it it should show wear on the nylon anyway. Replace with HB-125.
None at all, it would have had enough residule oil on the parts to prevent damage for that short distance. Put a qt of formula 1 or better mobil1 v-twin 20-50 or amsoil mc20-50 in and forget it.
Thanks for the replys, I did fill it up and rode it on a trip to Columbus, Ga and back with no problems. I will replace the shoe on next oil change. I plan to pull the whole cover and take a close look at everything. Will do a search on HB-125, I assume this is a self adjuster.
Well at least you tempered your gears. Years ago Hot rodders would run only half of rear end gear on a new rebuild for a few miles to temper and seat the gear mesh. I don't know if it helped or not however.
