Hi Guys
My first post here - be gentle.
I'm intrigued by a bike for sale here in Cape Town, South Africa.
It's a custom softail with a 1340 evo motor running through a 4 speed kickstart transmission.
That's not stock right?
It's selling for not too much cash and looks like it could be the start for a cool project bike I have in mind.
Any opinions on the engine/gearbox combo?
There's a few other things too:
Builder says it has a Custom softail frame 58-84 - what do those numbers mean?
The primary is described as a 'cut down' style which 'means no oil leaks here' - opinions on that too please.
Thanks for the time fellas, look forward to the replies......
Cheers.
Drew
Hi Drew and welcome to HDF from the UK. This Tech forum doesn't get many visitors so I suggest you post again in the Evo section, where you will find our experts on early Evos. Some very early Evos had 4-speeds, as far as I know, so that bike may be fine from that point of view. It would help if you can post some photos on another website and give us a link, so we can a look at this bike, but do that over in the Evo section.
all 1984 and 1985 softails had evos and 4 speed kickstarts. there only was the FXST softail, no other variations of softail. 1986 started the FXSTC and the Heritage model softail. In 1986 all softails had the 5 speed with no kickers.
The 1985 and 1986 Wide Glide (FXWG) had the evo with the 4 speed kickstart, and was the last of any kickstarts for harley.
Thanks for the info, fellas.
I'll post a pic of the bike over in the EVO section.
I've found out a bit more:
Frame is a Santee, '84 EVO motor with 4spd kick only, 4" over fork, drag pipes, mustang tank. I hope to be taking delivery saturday.
I should have added - all the 4 speed kickstart evos had electric start from the factory also. as you have already pointed out, your bike is not stock.
My evo can be a beast to kick over, not sure I would want to have to do it all the time. good ignition is critical to easier kick starting.
