Default Transmission problem (maybe)

Here's the situation, don't know if it is a problem or not... when I'm accelerating hard sometimes, not always, and I'm shifting from third gear into fourth I push down on the heel shift and nothing is there. I can push all the way down and no resistance / no shift. Once I let off on the throttle just a bit I can shift. A mechanic at the dealership said the transmission "needed vibration sometimes to get it to shift into gear." That doesn't sound right to me. Anyone else experience this?

Another thing that happens even less frequently I can best describe as a "slip". It usually happens after I've shifted into a higher gear and I get a lurch where it feels like the clutch is slipping or something. This has happened maybe twice in the 1500 miles I've ridden the bike.

Thanks for any info,

There's a number of transmission adjustments that can be made, but I would leave it to a pro if you are not familiar with the workings of the trans.

Geez. I don't know much about transmissions (I'm lucky I can even spell it), but that excuse....errrr I mean explanation offered by the mechanic at the dealership sounds kind of flimsy to me. I would seek a second opinion.

Wingnut (why that moniker, this ain't a Honda site), sounds more like clutch adjustment to me. And, what's this crap about needing vibration to get into gear? Your wrench should put away the crack pipe.

I thought the vibration comment was a bunch of crap. The bike is under warranty, so I'll give it a bit longer and take it in. What sucks about the warranty is I have to take it to a Harley dealer until my 2 year factory is up. After that, under the extended warranty, I can take it to a local bike shop I trust more that is certified to do HD extended warranty work.

I figured out wingnut might not be the right name for this site a little late. It's actually a name I've used in some online shoot-em-up games.

I hope you are joking about the vibration comment. I certainly am. If I pissed you off, sorry!

I used to own a couple of Wings, and everyone jokingly refered to me as the Wingnut.

I meant the comment coming from the mechanic at the dealer being "crap", not from you Scout . One of the major drawbacks with forums, you can't get immediate feedbacks on your remarks. I've seen massive flame wars start from a simple misunderstanding.

So I guess no one else has this problem with shifting? Anyone know of any documentation that explains the HD shifting mechanism? The service manual does a pretty good job with the gearing in the transmission but doesn't give much detail as to how the gears are actually shifted. I'm thinking that because of the way I'm accelerating I'm not allowing something in the shifting mechanism to "engage" that will allow me to go into the next gear. Just a hunch, hell my degree says electrical engineer not mechanical.

Kent

Not trying to be funny here but have you ruled out your shifting technique? Maybe you just aren't lifting the shifter with enough authority or high enough? Just a thought.

One thing I noticed from your first post, is the comment " Once I let off the throttle just a bit I can shift" it sounds like you are doing what I call speed shifting. Are you keeping the throttle open and using the clutch to shift like this? It's possible you have the transmission in too much of a load bind, causing the shift problem. Just a thought.
