Default How to remove the damn starter!!!!

I can not figure out for the life of me how to get the starter out!!!! I have the 2 bolts loose but how do you disconnect the wire coming out of the bottom of the starter?????? Im about to go crazy looking at this thing. I think I ruined the "boot" that connects to the other part up and to the right of the starter. Bikes on the lift so any help would be appreciated.

I know there has to be a trick that I'm just not seeing.

Thanks, Jeremy

Have you removed the jackshaft bolt from inside the primary?

nope I finally found a video. Do you have to take the primary cover off? I thought you could do it with just the 2 bolts and the power disconnected

Primary cover has to come off. Watch the video a couple times before going any further.
And invest in a factory service manual, the best $60 you'll spend on your ride. Not the Cymer one.

Only the 99-06 models you have to pull primary cover off. If your working on 08 steet glide you have listed, it has no jackshaft, so primary cover doesn't have to come off. Here's the steps to remove starter.
1- Remove seat and disconnect negative battery cable from battery
2- Remove positive battery cable from starter solenoid( nut under rubber boot on top of starter
3- Remove start wire from solenoid( plastic connector on solenoid)
4- Remove the two starter bolts and pull starter from inner primary cover
Sometimes it will take a little force to remove, caused from the o-ring drying out and sticking.

thanks toofat!!! I realized I didn't have to take the primary cover off AFTER I took it off. Oh well I got a good look at my primary. I got the starter out and the speed sensor swapped out. Kinda a lot of work to replace that damn thing. Now my next question is. There is a boot that goes over a wire between the starter and the other piece I forget what its called. Do you know if I can get a new one from Harley?

Thanks, Jeremy

No problem QC. I do have a Harley service manual. My problem was I was combining a video with what the book was saying. Got me overthinking it. All good now.

Here, this site will help you when looking for parts. Use the OEM parts finder. The rubber boot cover is available. Part# 31643-06
