I've been on it twice and it was asphalt both times. If you're wondering if it's suitable for a motorcycle, yes, it is. Just be aware that water runs across the road from snow melt year round in some spots (just wet, not deep) and you wouldn't want to ride it early in the morning if there were freezing temps overnight. And don't forget your camera, the scenery is spectacular. I went across the Canadian side, they keep a good pavement, too. And more great scenery.
This is the only pic I have that shows the pavement. You can also see all of it on Google street view.
Went through the end of July. The east road was under construction for about 5 miles. It was hard packed gravel. No problem for bikes. In the morning it was 46 degrees in Missoula and it was reported that it had snowed on Road to the Sun. The snow was cleared by the time we got up there. I'm guessing it could be quite cold up there this time of year. Here are some pics of the east road. This area is well after you come down from the high, twisty roads.
Was there a couple of years ago. It was paved and there was construction then to. Like anywhere else a construction zone is just that and no problems for the bike.
Stopped at a construction zone. You can just get a peek of the road.
I've been fortunate to have traveled to Europe and Australia and many parts of this wonderful country. Glacier National Park is one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. It is simply breathtaking.

I agree with you. When we visited Glacier in July of 2010 we also trekked north into Alberta to the Canadian Rockies since we were that close. They are equally impressive.
