No tolls on A1A.
The easiest way to get to the top of the keys is the Florida Turnpike which is a toll road. Basically get on the T-pike and follow it to its end and it dumps you out on A1A at the mouth of the keys.
You can get there without hitting the T-pike, but it isn't worth it because of the Miami traffic.
He Jonesee, what is the traffic like this time of year in the keys? Been twenty years since I was there and know it can be a hassle even back then.
I just looked at the calendar and June 10-14 is Key West Pride.
I assume you will be arriving after the 14th.
If not:
Get your hotel now and bring an open mind.
In Key West, parking is a premium. Look for a hotel that offers parking on premises. I had good luck at a Bed and Breakfast this summer that allowed my wife and I and another couple park our bikes behind their gates on a terrace or patio area. It worked out real well. The B&B was cheaper than a lot of hotels.
The only toll road in the keys is Card Sound Road, and that's just $2
No need to take Card Sound Road. Just blast down the turnpike til it ends, then stay on the road headed south til you arrive in Key West.
Last Feb we rented a bike in Ft Myers and rode to Key West. WE stayed at a place called Authors of Key West. Walking distance to Duval on White St. Easy parking on the side street. The Tamami Trail is US 41. 2 lane road & I'd guess the "old road". Been at the farth north end of it (Copper Harbor MI) and the far south end of it just north of Homestead FL.
Jonesee I did not know about Key West pride thanks for letting me know I should be getting there on about Mon the 15th So I should be good to go don't need no stinkin pride
