I second US27. You can take that to Krome Ave which will dump you off in Homestead and US1. If you're coming from Naples area, you have a choice of 75 (Alligator Alley -4 lane) or 41 (Tamiami Trail -2 lane). 41 is scenic but lots of accidents with people trying to pass.

Last I knew, Card Sound toll was $1, but that was last Feb.

As everyone says, stay within walking distance of Duval, and try for the north end by the Westin.

Let me know if you want my list of restaurants/bars in the Keys.

We stayed at Southwind Motel on Simonton St. ($79 a night in July for a week), A block from Duval St. and 2 blocks from Southernmost Point Buoy. Walking Distance everywhere. Tons of restaurants to choose from. Check out Mallory Square to watch the sunset. Only rained for a few hours once as the rest of the week was beautiful. Breezy winds until we got back to the inland (Central Florida), so torching hot !.

I would avoid all the traffic on the Interstates (75 and 95) on West and East Coasts. Get on 27 which leads you on the road pass by Central Florida's Lake Ochobeekee (Sp.?) and get on the Homestead Extension Florida Turnpike to the Keys. Study the map and familiarize yourself.

Have a safe trip,

Thorey

Park your bikes when you get there and rent scooters. Can park them just about anywhere and will have a ball running around on them .

We just took this route a couple weeks ago. It's a little slower than I-75/Alligator Alley, but we both enjoyed the ride much more. Much better scenery, good roads until you hit western Dade County. No tolls at all.

We took the Corvette on that trip so passing slower cars was very easy.

June will be hot..Florida summer hot. Rain gear is a must, as is lots of water and sunscreen. When we go down, we always stay at the Pier House which is near Duval St and the boardwalk.

Two of us on Ultra's and have yet to get a toll road bill in the mail. Guess the Tour Pack covered our plates.
stay on 75 to Naples and ride across the old road to Homestead.
My wife and I went from Fort Myers to Ket West. We stayed on the old road through the everglades, very cool with all the gators on the side of the road. Probably saw a dozen or more. No tolls like on 75(alligator alley) and lots of local stops. We ended up eating lunch in a restaurant that was obviously intended for the migrant workers. Very authentic Mexican and there was only one other person in the restaurant that spoke english that was able to help us order. I like those experiences, mcdonalds and apple bees are everywhere.

I wish I was on a bike but we were visiting the inlaws who live there and had a rental car. I love key west and will definitely go back.

No Name Pub is a nice stop, the key deer are all over that area. In Key West I stay at the Banyan Resort, safe parking and within walking distance of everything.

I took my family a couple of years ago and loved Key West. We stayed at the Casa Marina. Louis Backyard was a nice touristy restaurant. El Siboney was a great Cuban restaurant with more locals than tourists (usually a sign that the food is good). Mallory Square, Duval St. both fun with plenty of good bars. Would love to get back there this January.

Enjoy the ride! And, as an earlier post pointed out, Key West itself is small and probably more fun on a scooter or even a bicycle.
