Default Grand Canyon

A friend and I are riding to the Grand Canyon from Tulsa, the last week of June. He wants to camp, I would prefer a motel. I am not sure how long to plan to stay. They say everything fills up quickly
Thanks, Larry

Lots of options for accommodations. I don't camp, so I can't help you there.

Some folks like to stay in historic Williams. There is an old train you can ride to the Canyon (slow boat to China), but it has a nice Route 66 ambiance to it. It's a small town, so it has a low key laid back vibe to it.

Flagstaff is a pretty good sized town with other attractions close by: Sunset Crater, Meteor Crater, Lowell Observatory, and some Route 66 nostalgia. It has a pretty vibrant night life in Old Town, thanks to the college being there.

There are places to stay in the park (including camping).

I would recommend Flagstaff. It's in a pretty central location for other things to do too.

Check the GC National Park website for camping. Pretty sure both South and North Rim are reservation only and the North Rim is really tough to get. Some hang out at the campground entrance hoping for a no-show. There's a campground at Jacob Lake you could look up, too.

The Wife and I prefer Williams. We like the more laid back kind of place

Thanks everyone. I was afraid we couldn't get a place to stay on short notice.

I really like it, but... it's out in the middle of no-where and there isn't much there.

We stayed at the Best Western at the Canyon. Very comfortable, reasonably priced, and close to any type of excursions that you might want.
We rode from GC to Vegas, including a part of Rt 66 and stopping at Hoover Dam for 2 hours, in one (long) day. We left GC around noon and arrived in Vegas at 9 pm.

Notice the water line along the edge. Extremely low water reserves.

I do the North Rim. Camp at Demotte Meadow or Jacob Lake Forest Service Camp Grounds, but there is also a lodge at both Demotte and Jacob Lake, and a commercial camp ground at Jacob Lake withshowers. North Rim is much less crowded than South Rim, and No Railing! You can sit on the edge of a cliff with your feet hanging over and look down on the buzzards. Also lots of miles of wonderful 2 lane twisties with little traffic on the North Rim. South Rim can be a big parking lot.

North Rim Scenery cannot be beat. This one near Bright Angel Point.
