I was thinking of riding the Mississippi from around Somerset Wisconsin down to Savanna Illinois. I will be doing this in September but do not know if I should do it late or early September. What places do I have to stop at or roads to take? Thanks for the info.
I have ridden both sides from Red Wing MN to Memphis. Since you are not going that far south I will keep my comments to the portion you will be on.
I am guessing this is a round trip? If it is simply go down one side and back up the other.
Savanah has a couple cool places, poopsys and the bar downtown whose name escapes me at the moment.
26 on the west side south of Lacrosse is a great ride, south of Lansing it turns into the river road. Nice riding through there and cool old towns.
Guttenberg is farther south and my wife has always enjoyed stopping there and looking around. They seem to have a lot of festivals there which could be good or bad depending on your mood.
Farther south is Balltown, great views and alledgedly Iowas oldest countinously running restaurant. Great food there!
Or if you are on the east side of the river at that point stop in Pelosi and have a beer at the local brewery. Farther south on the WI side you can stop at the Grouto in Dickeyville if you find weird stuff made from weird stuff cool.
Of course there is always Galena, IL a great tourist trap. At Dubuque IA there is the Mississippi River museum, it is kind of cool for a stop. There is a casino not far from the museum.
Red Wing has the worlds largest boot and Winona MN has a tall rock you can hike up for some great views of the area.
Hope this helps. If you are looking for fall color I would say later in the month would be better.
Thanks for the replies. I have heard to stop and see the restaurant for Grumpy Old Men in Wabasha. Take most of the Wisconsin side down and south of Lacrosse to go into Iowa and stop at the oldest bar in Balltown I believe. I was thinking of staying in Savanna at L&M Motel because they have shuttles to poopys, but they are full for the weekend after Labor Day already. There is another motel that I could stay at, but just want to make sure it would be worth it to stay in Savanna or another town close? I am making this a long weekend. Leaving northwest Iowa on Friday Morning and being back on Sunday afternoon. On the way home maybe making a stop at the field of dreams ball field. There is also a biker bar up from from Winona I believe. Suppossedly a huge place I would need to stop at also?
