Default Need tent advice ....

I am in the market for a new tent for the upcoming season. I'm pretty set on the Marmot limelight series. I'm fed going with a 3 person which is on sale for 190.00 shipped. My other option is the 4p at 276.00 shipped. I'd like to know if anyone has experience with either and does it sound worth the extra bucks to get into a 4p or is that overkill. I'd like to be able to fit a queen size air pad in it .... Not sure if the 3p is capable of that. I'd be camping with buddies , but tenting in my tent by myself or the occasion trip when the Chiquita comes.
I've camped all my life , but never off my bike. I have quite a few ideas and some time coming to me this season and I'll be on Theron's )))

Any Suggestions are greatly appreciated

Thank you in advance

TD

I use a thermarest pad...it rolls up and fits in the top of my saddlebag.

my tent choice is too small for you- space is limited- so think about space, how you'll carry it, and how high the weight will be.

too much stuff and you'll be shopping a trailer soon

Mike is right - Thermarest is easily as important as tent - even a small/thin one makes a world of diff in both heat retention and comfort. Other out of the box options for tenting are bivouacking and various types of covered hammocks if that suits you.

You are on the right track. Pay the money for a good Marmont or MSR two or more man tent. I elk hunt at 10,000 feet using a MSR two man. Very light, very packable. Early on, i used the thermarest pad, but now i lay an air mattress on top of the thermarest pad. That pad was just too thin for my old ***. If u have camped much, u will know that you need a 4 man tent if you plan on sleeping two people. Otherwise, a two man tent will work with a little room to keep some of your extras out of the weather.

Thanks everyone !!!!! Greatly appreciated. I really didn't want to spend the extra money for a 4 man tent , but it lacks close to the same and I'm guessing the extra room would be nice

I have a thermarest base camp. It works but I'm looking for something a little more comfortable and thicker that doesn't cost 2-300 bones

I have two Thermas and an Alps Mountaineering 3 inch thick model (in tall/wide) - very comfy. A bit thick for the back of a bike. But they probably have a good model for you very competitive to what Thermarest would charge. Quality is quite good.

The problem with air-only mattresses - they will soak the heat from your body quickly. That's why Therma-Rest mattresses have the inner foam - it slows the heat transfer, and provides a bit of insulating value. If you've ever camped in weather cooler than 60-65 degrees F, you don't want just a thin piece of PVC or vinyl between you and an air layer. Convection current in an air mattress can be very uncomfortable.

Just double up on the Therma-Rest mattress(es) - or use two foam types, Ridge-Rest or equivalent. You'll get the extra comfort you want, with the insulation needed. Plus, they'll weigh much less than an air mattress.

I think the 3-person tent size is best, IMO. I even use this size to backpack for me and my wife. Weight isn't usually a big constraint for MC camping, but it does add up. Plus, it's much easier to pack on a bike when you minimize both size and weight.

Hope this helps,
John
