I will be heading south from PA to Savannah GA in a little over a month. I know I95 can get very congested at times. Would I be better taking the longer route down I81 to I77? I hate traffic jams

Depending on time of day you'll get traffic on I77 from just north of Charlotte on down.

It will depend how many a$$holes there are on the road that day that cause accidents....

Obviously, avoid D.C. Then take I-295 around Richmond, after that its not bad unless there is some unexpected pile up....that and the damn "South of the Border Signs" !!

I've been in the mid-Atlantic states for the last 12 yrs and that's my take.

95 is a crapshoot, sometimes nonstop, most times not. avoid rush hour south of DC and if you take 295 around Richmond, they will ticket you for reckless driving around Hopewell. be careful and have a nice trip.

I'm in N Central PA, and go to Norfolk VA frequently. I take 81 down to 66, and then 17 down to Fredericksburg. Then 295 around Richmond to 64. Sorry, but I can't help you much on 95, south of Richmond, but 81, 66, 17 is how I avoid DC.

I'll 2nd Geezr on the route to Fredericksburg. Also, the cops around Emporia, VA are ticket happy too, the last 15 miles or so until you cross into NC. I usually don't go more than 5mph over in that area.

Coming back north out of Georgia into South Carolina is a real headache on weekends. The freeway goes from 3 lanes to 2 and it seems like every time I come through there is at least one accident with the gawkers adding to the congestion. Seems I'm always coming up through there on a Sunday night. Going down, not so bad usually, and don't let the South Of The Border tourist trap worry you. It used to be ridiculous and now it's just stupid. There were goofy billboards every half mile for 50 miles in either direction but a lot of them are gone now.

I agree with the above...made that trip way too many times.

Thats how I avoided traffic from Pa to Florida, If you travel at night after 10-11 you can buzz through Richmond skipping the bypass.
Watch out for traffic in Fredricksburg from 3-6 weekdays. Not horrible but will slow ya down.
