Thats how I avoided traffic from Pa to Florida, If you travel at night after 10-11 you can buzz through Richmond skipping the bypass.
Watch out for traffic in Fredricksburg from 3-6 weekdays. Not horrible but will slow ya down.
I second all of that. That's the route I take when we drive from Maine down to Florida.
Not regular, but I81 seems generally a better pick. I was headed to or from Chattanooga, Knoxville, Atlanta, Charlotte, or Birmingham, so can't speak for the last bit.
I'm in N Central PA, and go to Norfolk VA frequently. I take 81 down to 66, and then 17 down to Fredericksburg. Then 295 around Richmond to 64. Sorry, but I can't help you much on 95, south of Richmond, but 81, 66, 17 is how I avoid DC.

I'm with these guys, 81/66/17 to Fredericksburg. Once you get by Richmond it's clear sailing.
I go from Fl to NJ often. I go thru DC area at night. after 9pm or before 7 am. Never have a problem. Richmond by pass is good but again I usually hit it at the off hours. Jacksonville sucks at rush hours. Use that bypass also but it gets heavy at rush hour too.
95 in SC was washed out last May THAT SUCKED!!! REAL f'ed detours
All better now though
My very strong advice is to avoid 95 between north of DC and Richmond. The traffic can be heavy at any time of day and a 2hr trip can turn to 4 hrs really fast. Only top of that, the ride is boring and, at times, more dangerous than needed.
I suggest you take 70 to Fredrick then 340 to 7 to 81. You can get to 70 from 695 in Baltimore or take 95 south to 32 south to 70.
70 and 340 hardly ever have traffic and 340 is a nice country highway.
I use to live NE PA just out side of Philly and did exact trip twice a year with work. My boss and I take 95 to Delaware then take 301 that runs parallel to 95 you will skip all DC traffic. Some times we would take RT 7 to Dover then RT 13 take the bridge and tunnel to Norfolk, VA then 58 to 17 all the way to Charleston then take 95. Good luck with your trip
