Don't plan on going any earlier than early July. The road usually doesn't open up until mid June, but some years it can be as late as July 4th. This year hasn't been too bad though, so I would say you will be fine.
Definitely bring some rain/cold weather gear. I have been up there in July before and there were people sledding down the hills at Logan Pass. As far as construction goes, I think they have most of it done, but not sure. I went up there last October and there wasn't a lot to contend with as I recall.
If you do make it south, the same rules about weather apply to Beartooth pass. It technically opens at the end of May, but can easily be snowed over later than that. I would also highly recommend seeing Yellowstone, and if you go there, you HAVE to go to Grand Teton NP. It's one of my favorite rides!
We went in early August. It snowed in the pass the night before. It was 40 degrees when we got up in the morning. By noon it was around 60 in the pass. It was one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen on this earth. God's country for sure.
Adding this to my list. Heading this direction in July, before I head to Sturgis. Thanks for showing the light. So now it's Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Bear tooth pass, Dead Indian pass and now Going to the Sun! Thanks again.
Must see. you will love it. First time I was there in late July it was cold and rainy and miserable. The second time I was there it was in the 60's and sunny in late July.
