My wife and I will be riding from New Orleans to Pensacola in June. Any suggestions on best places to ride and see would be much appreciated. We enjoy stopping at fun dive bars along the way.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Take Chef Highway (90) east from I10. The first few miles is not that great of a neighborhood. After a few miles, you will get into the marsh. Just before you cross the bridge at "The Rigolets" there is a bar, Crazy Al's. We usually ride over there and drink a beer and shoot a game of pool. The Rigolets is where Lake Ponchatrain empties into the gulf. There is an old fort there that protected the entrance to the Lake. I guess you can go inside.
Keep riding on 90 east through Bay St Louis and Waveland. Just before you cross the bridge, you can take a right and ride along the water for a half mile and there are some nice restaurants and bars.
Continue riding along 90 east. Lots of good eating places and casinos. I would ride until I crossed over the bridge at Ocean Springs and then hit the interstate.
You could go over to Dauphine Island, there is another fort, and ride the ferry across to Gulf Shores, AL. Where there is another fort. The ride across AL is not very long, but pretty. There are some good eating joints there as well.
Then ride into FL/ There you will leave the beach and ride inland to Pensacola. There you have to go through downtown and take the bridges to Pensacola Beach.
I did a write up of our trip to Pensacola Beach a couple of years ago. Do a search and find it. I will cover some of the area you will be riding through.
I guess it depends on how much time you want to take. NOLA to Pensacola is really just a short ride about 3 hrs. Out of NOLA if you want to stay off the interstate you can take US 90 along the MS Gulf Coast but to be honest its not exactly a beautiful ride along the beach. Don't expect to see waves, clear water or great beaches. There are a few little beach bars scattered through the area. If you want some good BBQ "The Shed" in Ocean Springs is a good place depending on the day and time they may have someone in playing some Blues. Shaggys on the beach in Biloxi is good beach bar in the area.
After the MS Gulf Coast you can stay on 90 to Mobile or jump on I10, after crossing the bay in Mobile you are less than a hr from Pensacola so you can stay on I10 to Pensacola or opt for the more scenic drive on 98. I would suggest after Mobile take 98 then jump on 59 in Foley which will take you to LA (Lower Alabama) where you have Gulf Shores, Orange Beach etc.. In Gulf Shores you can hit Perdido Beach Blvd across Perdido Key into Pensacola. The beaches around Gulf Shores/Orange beach are much more scenic than the ones along the MS Gulf Coast. You will actually see waves and clear water LOL. Lots of beach bars in the area including the FloraBama on the state line.
To be honest if it were me I would probably blast through from NOLA to Mobile on 10 then hit 98 after Mobile Bay and take my time through LA into Pensacola.
The "Original Oyster House Seafood" was my favorite place we ate on our trip to Pensacola Beach.
its right on 59 in Gulf Shores, Al. The stuffed Mushrooms are to die for.

They have the best Shrimp and Grits I have ever had.
My Wife and I went to "The Shed." We enjoyed it, but we don't really have BBQ joints in Canada. We keep threatening to go back / or order some in. [You can FedEx some home...] It was in Mississippi I believe. Ocean Springs??
There was a NASA spot to view the lunar landing modules. It was good for a break, and cool to see the gear up close.
Pensacola we stayed at Margaritaville in Pensacola Beach. It is awesome, when people don't bring their kids there. We've been three times now, and it seems to be more and more popular & more and more kids. Ask around, maybe they smartened up. Have the Pensacola Bushwacker [or get the wife to and have a sip] It tastes like a chocolate sundae. I usually stick to Landshark Lager. Totally different vibe than the Vegas location.
