If you have an extra day rent a jeep when you get there. Off roaming in the San Juan mountains is spectacular.
My favorite jeep trails are:
1 Silverton to Lake City. Make a loop starting Silverton to LC. Return over Engineer Pass to Million $ Highway. Then back to Durango.
2 Ouray to Telluride over Imogene Pass. Yankee Boy Basin is a must. You can return through Delores back to Durango.
