Its not a far ride from my house, only about 400 miles, but my wife said that she would like to do her first over night bike trip. I have heard so much about the finger lakes so I think this would be perfect. The ride will be great and the ride around the lakes will very scenic but I am looking for things and places to go while out there. I was thinking of ballooning, or renting a boat, or riding in a glider, or a combination of a couple of these. Did I miss anything? Where is the best locations in the finger lakes area to have a wonderful romantic week end with out the daughter and do a few things that we have never done before?
I live in PA, not far south of the lakes. There's Watkins Glen State Park, and also Google Taughannock Falls near Ithaca NY. Sodus Point NY is a nice little artsy-type town up on Lake Ontario. Some nice restaurants right on the lake, you can walk around the little village at night, and my son & daughter-in-law went up there for a little getaway, but I can't remember where they stayed. Google Letchworth State Park too. It's a little further west, but it's really cool, and there's a place right in the park called the Glen Iris Inn that's right near a big waterfall, that might be worth looking up. Google Glen Iris Inn, and click on Images. You walk out the door of the Inn, and you'll be looking at the falls. You'll see them on Images.
The wife and I got engaged in Watkins Glen, in the Gorge, so holds lots of good memories for me. The riding is great, wine tasting is a big thing up there as well. And the track is there, plan around OR for NASCAR, they take the entire town over that weekend.
We always wanted to stay at the Seneca Lodge, always booked when we try and plan something. At least go for dinner if you like Prime Rib:
