Hey all,
I live in Seattle and get a week or more out on the bike every summer into the western US and western CA. I'm trying to figure out a way to mark these trips on a decorative map that I can appreciate when I'm too old to ride (in MANY more years). A regular map with highlighter doesn't quite get what I'm looking for. Thanks!
A riding buddy of mine has a Photo album of each of his big trips with photos and routes taken each day, detailed side notes about sights, people etc. Looking back, I wished I had done this. I enjoy looking at the older albums, photos of the old bikes, towns that have really changed since, etc.
As far as decorating a map, colored pins , high lighter etc.
I've tried marking on a map but found that it gets kind of crazy with multiple lines through the same points. I now keep a blog of my trips and use hat pins on a map. Here's a picture of the map.
My wife leaves a love lock at places we travel and snaps a picture of it. Once home she numbers a push pin for the wall map. The picture goes in a album with its location.
I told my 4 kids that they have to trace our travels and find the locks, their inheritance with be divided among them accordingly.
We use a wall map of the U.S., put push pins in the cities where we stayed and connect the pins by colored string to indicate the route. Since we travel some roads frequently, we only string routes that are new.
