Default TN Hwy 32 - Cosby TN to NC

I live in the Volunteer State and have ridden the mountains of East Tennessee many times. But today, I learned of Highway 32. It runs southeast from Cosby, TN to I-40 in North Carolina. It is very secluded and has plenty of switchbacks and altitude changes. They say that the southern end of the road is "dirt" for two miles, until you reach I-40.

Has anyone rode this 14 mile stretch of road? Is it truly a dirt road or is it packed gravel? Thanks,

HDMike, I used to live in Gatlinburg, now live in Knoxville, and have a couple of friends who have both rode (or tried to ride) that road at different times. Both recommended against trying it. One turned around and I think the other might have done the entire length but regretted starting down it. I think that there is more dirt than pavement. They would never do it again.

I appreciate the advice, ClinKnox! I'm not a thrill seeker to the point I want to wreck my Road Glide!

Glad to help. I ride by the north end of that road occasionally but have never gone down it myself. I'll usually take the Foothills Pkwy and then pick up 40 that way. We still have our place in Gatlinburg and I like to ride the Rattler into Hot Springs at least once a year. If I don't want to go over 441 and through Maggie Valley I'll cut over to I40 and take it to exit 24 in NC. Rte 209 (the Rattler) is a good ride if you haven't done it before. You can eat in Hot Springs and then go back thru Del Rio and stop at Bobarosa.

I have ridden NC Hwy 209 in the past. It is a great road.

It's not as well known as the Dragon or Cherohala. The only problem is that they use stone on the road shoulders and a lot of turns will end up with stones in the road.

it's a decent ride from cosby to maggie valley on 32 if you aren't in a hurry---you'll cross the applacian trail at the top---hang there a while and meet some of the hikers---yep--it be dirt and gravel and very doable---take your time

Thanks. I'm seriously considering making that a weekend trip.
