I am a 'lone wolf' rider and I like to ride in remote areas. For this reason, I figure out my (approximate) route on Google maps then email that to my daughter. I text my departure, midpoint, and arrivals to her. Hopefully if something goes wrong then that technological info might save my bacon. I also have about 5 different map apps on my phone just in case I get massively lost.

Paper maps don't need a cell signal to tell you where you are at.....I like my GPS but keep a map in the saddle bag. Going on a group ride in July and think I will use your idea of taking a pic of the route and texting to each member. Then if we get separated its not a big deal. Great idea.....Thanks

I have a smart phone and a GPS. Phone is always off in the saddle bag. GPS is handy but I only use it part of the time when I am out of state and where a wrong turn can put you grossly far from the destination like the mountains. I use google maps to plan my routes and usually I can remember how to get somewhere.

I do ride with some guys that use their GPS's religiously and run into trouble when it has a brain fart and starts routing them incorrectly.

My iPhones have been the handiest devices I have ever owned but you give up your privacy when you own and use one. It knows where you are at 24/7. It knows where you live, what you drive, and what you eat. It knows when you are awake and asleep. It knows what you buy and what you pay for it. It knows the Doctors you use and what medications you take. I could go on and on. It is what it is.
